In this hands-on workshop you will learn to test, mixing and apply earthen plasters using both found and purchased clay, sand, fibers and other additives. You will also learn to use lime-sand plaster for high-moisture situations and simple, reliable recipes for natural paints. We will go through the process of testing and developing mix ratios for earthen floors and finish plasters. Lectures and slide presentations will focus on the range of natural finishing options and on design and construction details for protecting natural walls from moisture damage. This is the final part of a 3-part series of workshops, which all together will expose you to many skills and concepts necessary for building your own healthy, beautiful and durable natural home.

Lead instructor Michael G. Smith has designed and built over 50 hybrid natural buildings, ranging from ovens and composting toilets to a 3,000 s.f. community house. He has been teaching hands-on workshops like these since 1993. He is co-author of The Hand-Sculpted House and The Art of Natural Building.
